Double Denim: The Surprising Origin of the Term ‘Canadian Tuxedo’

Two years ago I waltzed into my NYC internship, wearing head to toe denim. My coworkers teased, “Cool Canadian Tuxedo.” And trust me, it was.

But why is it called the ‘Canadian Tudo’?

As the story goes, Levi’s Strauss caught wind that famed American actor/singer, Bing Crosby, was denied a nights stay at a ritzy Vancouver hotel for wearing a denim jacket (a fashion no-no thanks to rebels like James Dean and Marlon Brando). The brand in turn created a custom denim get-up for Bing complete with a leather patch that demanded the wearer be treated with respect, and voila the Canadian Tux was coined.

Fast-forward to Fashion Week 2017 and find that the double denim look has become an industry fave. Raf Simon’s used the bluey hues in his debut collection for Calvin Klein. Quirky Adam Selman included denim in jumpsuit form, complete with embroidered roses. And Tibi imagined the look as a midi skirt over denim pants.

In celebration of our nations 150th birthday (and cool denim claim to fame), we’ve rounded up our favourite double denim looks from Instagram below.
